Recording that KCSiE has been read

KCSiE 2026

KCSiE 2026 states that it is essential that everybody working in a school or college understands their safeguarding responsibilities.

Governing bodies and proprietors should ensure that those staff who work directly with children read at least Part one of KCSiE.

Governing bodies and proprietors, working with their senior leadership teams and especially their designated safeguarding lead, should now also ensure that those staff who do not work directly with children read Part one of KCSiE.

What this means: In short, all school staff whether they work directly with children or not, are now required to read at least Part 1 of KCSiE.

Recording this on your SCR

It is not your statutory duty to record this on your SCR. However, if you would like to do so, we have included a guide on how to build this in the template editor below.

If you are a single organisation, on your Sign In Central Record Dashboard, click on Settings>Organisation>Templates>Edit.

If you are a federation-level user, and you wish to add these sections and fields across all of your organisations, you will need to access the Template Editor via Settings>Federation>Templates>Edit.

Step 1: Add a Custom Section to your Template

At the bottom of the Section List (you may need to scroll down), there is a Button with a Plus symbol. Click this to create your new Section. Double-click on the "New Section" and you will be presented with the Section Editor.

Here you can change the following properties:

Name. This is what will appear when editing the Profile page or when printing Reports.

Icon. This is used when editing the Profile page.

Colour. This is used as the header when printing reports.

Visibility. Here you can choose which Profile Types this section will appear for.

Below is an example of a new section, that will show on Teaching Staff, Support Staff, and Governors only:

When you have finished making changes to the section editor, press Save to update your draft.

Step 2: Add your Custom Fields

Now you can add in your Custom Fields. Please see our Field Guide to understand the various fields available and how to edit them.

As always, the layout of your fields and what you would like included for a non-statutory section (in relation to the statutory requirements for your SCR) is entirely up to your organisations policies and/or preferences. Below is an example layout for recording 'KCSiE Part 1 Read':

Field 1: Confirmation toggle field. The below field is a confirmation toggle that KCSiE Part 1 has been read. The field has been given the 'School Ready' rating for Teaching Staff, Support Staff, and Governors:

Tip: As this section has already been turned off for the other profile types, you do not need to also turn off the fields for the other profile types.

Field 2: Date read field. The below field is a date field where you can record the date that the member of staff read KCSiE Part 1. You can also add an optional 1 year expiry to this field:

Read more about our expiry date validation rule here. Don't forget to click Publish Changes in the template editor once you are happy with your changes.

Tracking who has read KCSiE

There are a couple of ways you can record and track who has read KCSiE.

The Dashboard

You can either customised your default school dashboard, or you can add additional custom dashboards.

We have provided default widgets for our Expiring Check feature, which can be added by clicking the ‘+Add Widget’ button in the top right-hand corner of your dashboard:

You can also customise our default ‘Profile List’ widget to specifically track any specified field data.

To do this, first, add the ‘Profile List’ widget to your dashboard, and then click the cogwheel icon on the widget to open the widget settings. From here, you can edit the Title field, set filter logic(s), and show optional fields for any information that would be useful to see at a glance.

In the below example, I have customised the widget to show me any staff who do not have the confirmation toggle selected, or any staff who have a date entered prior to 01-Sep-26 (if this is the date that the document was provided to staff).

I've then asked the widget to show me the position held and start date of the profile, and specified the tags/profile types i'd like included.

For further information on dashboard and widget customisation, take a look at our help guide collection.

Reports

As with the dashboard, we have default reports set up where you can track any upcoming or expired checks. You can find these via the Insights tab:

It can also be useful to have a custom report to hand, showing a comprehensive list of all staff that have (or have not) completed the requirement to read KCSiE.

Start by creating a custom report, and then customise this to suit your requirements. In the below example, I have specified the fields I would like to see in my report and then added a condition so the report only shows me staff where the 'KCSiE Part 1 Read?' toggle has been selected:

This report will now remain a live and up-to-date list of all profiles that fall within this condition.
