How To Use The SIS Print Server

By default, the SIS Kiosk supports Brother label printers directly through the app. If you would like to connect to another printer brand, such a color or cardstock printer, you can do so with the SIS Print server.

In this case, your iPad kiosk does not talk to the printer directly. It sends the finished badge, as an image, to a small application called the Sign In Solutions Print Server running on a Windows PC on the same network. That PC then prints the badge on a printer it is already set up to use.

This guide covers installing and configuring that application.

Windows
Windows 10 (build 1809 or later) or Windows 11

Permissions
A local administrator account to run the installer

Printer
Already installed on your PC and able to print a Windows test page

Network
The PC, iPad, and Printer on the same network

Get the printer working on the PC first

Before you install anything, print a normal Windows test page from the PC to the label printer. the Print Server relies on an already existing connection between your PC and printer to work.

Setting up the PC

1. Download the print server

On the PC that will do the printing, go to signinsolutions.com/downloads and find the Print server section. Click the version link to start the download.

2. Unzip the download

The download arrives as a zip file. Right-click it, choose Extract All, and open the folder that appears. Inside you will find the installer file. Double-click it to begin.

3. Install

Work through the setup wizard. When you reach Ready to install, click Install.

Windows will ask you to confirm and you need administrator rights on this PC to continue.

The shield on the Install button means Windows will prompt for administrator approval. If you do not have it, stop here and ask your IT team.

4. Finish and launch

On the last screen, leave Launch Sign In Solutions - Print Server ticked and click Finish. The application needs to start now so it can request the network permission covered in the next step.

The first time the application starts, Windows will ask whether to allow it onto your network. Ensure you allow access.

Note: Without this permission the application will look like it is working perfectly, but the iPad will never be able to reach it, and no error will appear anywhere. If printing fails later and you are not sure what you clicked here, this is the first thing to check: open Windows Defender Firewall settings and confirm Sign In Solutions - Print Server is allowed on the network type your PC is currently using.

5. Note the IP address, then choose your printer

The application opens on its main screen. At the top is the IP Address of your PC. You will need to type this into your Kiosk shortly.

Below that is a list of every printer this PC can print to. Find your label printer and click Select next to it. A green tick and the word Selected confirm the choice.

If the list is missing your printer, click Refresh. If it is still missing, the printer is likely not properly communicating with the PC.

6. Check the print settings and run a test print

Click the gear icon in the top-right to open Settings. The setting that most matters is Media Size. It must match the label roll actually loaded in your printer or else the print job will fail.

Click Test print to confirm your connection/print settings. To view Logs, click the Lobs tab near the top of the page.

NOTE: The test print is your checkpoint

If a label prints here, the PC and printer are working correctly and you can move on to the iPad. If it does not, the problem is between this PC and the printer.

7. Leave it running

The application must be running for badges to print. Closing the window keeps it running in the background. You will find it in the system tray along you windows menu bar at the bottom.

Two things worth setting up now, so printing does not stop unexpectedly:

  • Set the PC never to sleep while plugged in. A sleeping PC stops accepting badges silently.

  • Make sure the application starts again after the PC restarts, or that someone opens it each morning. Overnight Windows updates are a common reason for badge printing failing first thing.

8. Connecting the iPad

With the PC ready, the last step is telling the kiosk where to send badges.

  1. On the Kiosk App's Welcome page, click the 'i' icon in the top-right corner

  2. Tap Printer Settings

  3. Enable Guestprint

  4. Tap SET PRINTER MANUALLY

  5. Enter the IP address you noted in step 6 above, including the dots. Tap Set.

9. Test the Print Job

You are now ready to try a print job directly from the iPad. The easiest way to do so is to complete a Kiosk Sign-In where the Experience is configured to Print Badge at the end of the sign-in flow.

Ensure that the SIE Kiosk app is allowed to "Find and Connect to Devices on Your Local Network". If you did not allow this on the initial install, you can enable it through the iOS settings via Settings --> Apps --> SIE Kiosk --> Local Network Togged ON.

In the Kiosk Experience editor within the admin portal, make sure the Print Badge button is checked on the Thank You Page(s) at the end of any of your paths you'd like to trigger a print job.
