Overview
Avigilon, owned by Motorola Solutions, offers physical security and access control solutions. The Sign In App extension integrates specifically with Avigilon Alta (formerly known as OpenPath), their cloud-based access control platform.
The Avigilon extension is the second native extension available in Portal 2.0. It connects visitor management with physical access by automatically pushing digital credentials to visitors through Avigilon Alta when triggered by events in Sign In App. This removes the need for reception or security staff to manually provision access in the Avigilon system.
Credentials are delivered digitally through the Avigilon Alta Open app. No physical badge or card is required.
Important: "Avigilon" can refer to two different products. Avigilon Alta (formerly OpenPath) is the cloud-based platform supported by this extension. Avigilon Unity/ACM is the on-premise system which is not supported.
Key benefits
✅ Automatic digital credentials: visitors get door access without anyone touching the Avigilon system.
✅ No physical badge required: visitors unlock doors with the Avigilon Alta Open app on their phone.
✅ Access that ends on its own: each pass is valid for 24 hours from sign-in, and is removed as soon as the visitor signs out.
✅ Different access for different visitors: install the extension once per visitor group, each pointing at its own Avigilon access group (for example, contractors get one group and general visitors another).
✅ Remote reception: run visitor management at unstaffed sites where no one is there to hand out cards.
Prerequisites
Sign In App Pro Plan or above
An Avigilon Alta (cloud-based) account. On-premise Avigilon Unity/ACM is not supported.
Avigilon Alta API access enabled. Some customers may need to purchase an additional API plugin from Avigilon.
Admin access to both the Sign In App portal and the Avigilon Alta admin console.
An Avigilon user for the extension to sign in as. We recommend a dedicated user rather than a staff member's own login.
A sign-in flow that collects the visitor's email address at each site you enable. The extension finds or creates the visitor in Avigilon by email, so a visitor who signs in without an email won't receive a pass.
Set up your Extension
Step 1: Create a visitor access group in Alta
In the Alta Access portal, go to Users > Access groups and create a group for visitors. Give it the door permissions visitors should have, and any time-of-day or day-of-week schedule you need.
Use a group that only visitors belong to. When a visitor signs out, the extension removes them from this group, so it shouldn't be shared with staff.
Want different access for different kinds of visitors? Create one group for each, for example "Contractors" and "Visitors".
Step 2: Enable the Avigilon Extension
Go to Manage > Extensions, where you'll see the providers available to you.
Click Avigilon to see its extensions, then click Install on Avigilon Sign-in.
Fill in the form:
Name: a name for this extension, for example "Avigilon visitor access".
Enable for site(s): the sites where visitors should receive a pass.
Enable for group(s): optionally, limit it to particular Sign In App groups.
Avigilon API login email and Avigilon API login password: the Avigilon user from the prerequisites.
Avigilon access group name (for visitors): the name of the group from Step 1. Type it exactly as it appears in Alta, including capital letters. If the name doesn't match, no pass is issued.
Click Install Integration.
Step 3: Install the Avigilon Sign-out extension
Back in the Avigilon provider, click Install on Avigilon Sign-out. Use the same sites, groups, login and access group name as Step 2.
Without this extension, visitors keep their pass until it expires 24 hours after sign-in.
Step 4: Different access for different visitors (optional)
Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for each kind of visitor. In each pair, choose the Sign In App group(s) for that kind of visitor and enter the matching Avigilon access group.
Step 5: Test the integration
Check the full flow with a test visitor:
Sign a test visitor in at an enabled site, entering an email address you can check.
Confirm the visitor appears in Alta, in your visitor access group, with a "SIA Visitor Pass".
Confirm the Avigilon setup email arrives.
Unlock a door with the pass in the Avigilon Alta Open app.
Sign the visitor out and confirm the pass is removed and the door no longer opens.
That's it! You're now set up with the Avigilon extension.
Credential Delivery
Visitors receive their credential through the Avigilon Alta Open app. When a pass is issued, Avigilon emails the visitor instructions to download and set up the app. In Avigilon, the pass appears as SIA Visitor Pass.
Once set up, visitors use the app to unlock the doors their access group allows. No physical badge or card is required.
How It Works
When a visitor signs in at an enabled site:
Sign In App looks the visitor up in Avigilon Alta by email and adds them if they're new.
The visitor is placed in your visitor access group.
A "SIA Visitor Pass" mobile credential is issued, valid for 24 hours.
Avigilon emails the visitor instructions to set up the Avigilon Alta Open app.
The visitor uses the app to unlock the doors their access group allows.
When the visitor signs out (Avigilon Sign-out extension):
Sign In App finds the visitor in Avigilon by email.
The "SIA Visitor Pass" is deleted.
The visitor is removed from the visitor access group.
Limitations and Constraints
Cloud only: on-premise Avigilon Unity/ACM is not supported.
One-directional: information flows from Sign In App to Avigilon only.
Email required: visitors who sign in without an email address don't receive a pass.
One access group per extension: to give different visitors different access, install a separate pair of extensions for each.
Digital credentials only: physical cards still need to be issued manually in Avigilon.
Visitor names: only the first and last words of a visitor's name are sent to Avigilon. For example, "Mary Jane van Dyke" appears as "Mary Dyke".
Avigilon licensing: some customers need an additional plugin or licence from Avigilon for API access.
View & Edit Installed Extensions
You can view and edit your installed extensions in Manage > Extensions > Installed. Filter the list by provider if needed.
Click an extension's name to see its full details and make changes. If you change the access group or sites on one Avigilon extension, make the same change on its partner.
Activity Log
In Manage > Extensions > Activity Log you can see all extension activity, including the time and date, trigger name, event and status.
