Kiosk - Settings

Settings is the kiosk app’s own configuration screen. Most of what you can set here can also be set for a whole site from the portal.

The welcome screen is the section of Sign In App where visitors can sign in and out, to read more about this, click here.

Accessing Settings

Sign In App opens to Settings the first time you launch it. To return later, hold your finger on the Welcome screen until the green circle completes, then tap Go to settings.

To start or join an evacuation, tap Evacuations in the top right. Please see here for the full guide on Kiosk - Evacuations.

Where your kiosk settings come from

A kiosk’s settings come from one of two places.

Site settings, managed in the portal

The settings you configure under Manage > Sites > Select site > Kiosk apply to every kiosk at that site, so you can change them without being at a device.

Local settings, managed on the device

The kiosk uses what is set in its own Settings screen instead. Choose this if someone needs to adjust a kiosk without portal access — a receptionist or site manager working at the screen in front of them — or if you have several kiosks at one site and need one configured differently from the rest.

Note that status alerts, visible groups and the PIN can each already be set for a single kiosk under Manage › Sites › Devices & QR posters, with everything else still managed for the site. If those are all you need to vary, local settings are not required.

Local settings need two steps. In the portal, tick Allow local device management under Manage > Sites > Kiosk > Local device management — this permits local settings but changes nothing on its own. Then on the kiosk, open Settings and turn off Use portal settings.

To check which a kiosk is using, look at the kiosk rather than the portal: if Use portal settings is off, it is using local settings. If the option is missing, the site is not allowing them yet.

The eleven settings a kiosk takes over

With local settings on, these come from the kiosk instead of the site:

  • Appearance

  • Night mode

  • Set a PIN

  • Show clock

  • Show time on confirmation

  • Welcome button

  • Spoken messages

  • Evacuation point

  • Full-form fields

  • Groups

  • Languages

Changes you make to these in the portal will not reach that kiosk, and changes made on the kiosk are not synced back.

Always set on the kiosk

Printers and Connect Tap pair with the hardware in front of you, so they are set on the kiosk whichever option it uses. The portal does not manage them.

Always set in the portal

Anything not listed above — your branding, sign in and out fields, and the rest of the site’s kiosk setup — is managed for the whole site and applies to every kiosk, whether or not it uses local settings.

PINs: A kiosk has two separate PINs. The PIN you set under Manage › Sites › Devices & QR posters applies while the kiosk is using site settings. Switch to local settings and that PIN stops working, and the kiosk has none until you set one on the device itself.

Switch back and the portal PIN applies again — the local one is kept but ignored. Neither is deleted, so after a switch check which PIN is in effect before assuming the settings screen is protected.

General Settings

Choose whether this device’s screens are displayed in light mode, dark mode, or following the device’s own system setting.

Night mode

With Night mode enabled, you can choose the start and end time when the device screen will dim when on the Welcome page. Interacting with the device will increase the brightness and it will return to the dim state after a few seconds of inactivity.

To enable night mode, select the toggle from the general settings menu. Two times will appear, the start time should be set to the time you want the screen to dim each day. The end time should be the set to when you want the screen to return to full brightness.

Set a PIN

A 4 digit PIN code can be created to protect the settings page when you try and access from the welcome page. The pin would also be required if you try to access the option to reprint a badge.

This will not prevent the settings from displaying when the app is first launched, so we also advise that you prevent anyone closing the app when in welcome mode. How this is achieved depends on the device and systems you are using. This could be via an MDM/EDM solution, Screen pinning or Guided Access. Please see your device manufacturers instructions.

iPad OS Tip: To prevent visitors exiting Sign In App you can use Guided Access which means a passcode has to be entered to leave the app.

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility, then turn on Guided Access.

  • Tap Passcode Settings, then tap Set Guided Access Passcode.

  • Enter a passcode, then re-enter it.

  • Whilst guided access is enabled enter Sign In App and triple click the home button to start guided access and press Start.

  • Once you’ve done this, pressing the home button once won’t do anything and triple clicking the home button will require the passcode to leave the app.

Show clock

Have a clock show on your welcome screen. You can choose either white or dark text to allow the clock to stand out on different backgrounds.

Show time on confirmation

Display the present date and time to visitors on the sign in/out confirmation screens.

Welcome Button

Display the ‘Tap to get started’ button option on the welcome screen. If this button is not displayed, touching the screen will still start the visit flow.

Spoken Messages

Enable your device to announce all sign in/out messages.

Please Note: This will use the device's own text to speak capabilities.

Evacuation Point

If you have this configured in the portal you can enable the map to be displayed to visitors after the messages section. Please see more about setting up evacuation points here.

Full-form fields

Once a visitor or employee has entered their name, this feature will change the display of additional fields or questions. When enabled, all additional fields and questions are contained on a single scrollable screen. If disabled, each question will be displayed on it’s own screen which allows for longer questions.

Activity statuses

If you use Time & Attendance and would like repeat visitors to be able to update their activity status from the Kiosk app, you can toggle this on from the Kiosk settings.

Read more about Time & Attendance and Activity Statuses.

Groups

A kiosk by default will display all groups that are associated with the site that the Kiosk is connected to. If you wanted to use a specific Kiosk for a unique workflow, you can choose to hide individual groups from that Kiosk.

Note: Hiding a group will not prevent these members from appearing in ‘Notify lists’ or from signing in with a QR code or RFID card.

Languages

Sign In App has over 30 languages available for visitors to choose when signing in. From here you can choose your primary language, the icon type for your language selector, and choose which languages you would like to be visible for selection.

Tip: You can provide custom translations for sign in/out fields, notices, group names, and welcome messages that are then presented in the language of choice for the person signing in. Click here to read the how-to-guide for custom translations.

Printers

To select a compatible printer to print your visitor badges, follow these instructions.

To connect your printer using Bluetooth you first need to pair the printer in your device settings. Printers connected using wifi need to be on the same network as your device to pair the devices. For more information on how to connect your printer click here.

Tip: Sign In App supports the following Brother label printers

  • QL-710W (Wi-Fi only)

  • QL-720NW (Ethernet and Wi-Fi)

  • QL-810W (Wi-Fi only)

  • QL-820NWB (Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth)

Connect Tap

Use your existing door access cards or fobs to sign in on your device. With one tap staff can easily sign in and out, simplifying the process and saving time for you and your employees. Not only is it quick and easy, but it’s also a secure way of signing in. Find the full how-to-guide for Sign In App Tap here.
